Highway 100 extension leading to detours and delays

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A massive construction project to extend Highway 100 is causing some major headaches for drivers in Cedar Rapids.

Starting Tuesday, traffic on Edgewood Road will go through a detour with only one lane in each direction. Plus, an on-ramp is closing, so drivers heading south on Edgewood wanting to go east on Highway 100 will use the current westbound exit ramp.

The Iowa Department of Transportation says there's going to be delays and recommends people find alternate routes.

Businesses nearby hope people won't steer clear. While nobody is looking forward to the construction headaches, everyone is excited about the end project.

Traffic on Edgewood Road already sees delays and soon the area will face even more as a massive detour gets put into place.

"It's taking a long time and people have to be extremely patient," said Tom Stratton, who lives in Cedar Rapids.

The DOT says this is a complicated process with a lot of moving parts. In fact, the detour got pushed back a day due to complications but the DOT says it will start Tuesday after the morning rush.

Businesses nearby are not looking forward to delays which are expected to last a year or longer.

"It's definitely going to be frustrating for our customers as well as the people that work and live in this area," said Tony Kassouf, owner of Lava Fusion.

Down the street at Beef O'Brady's, servers are nervous but trying to think of the possible positive impact of the slower traffic.

"The slower they're driving, the more they're going to be able to see that we have at Beef O'Brady's out here," said Susan Langguth, Beef O'Brady's Server. "Hopefully people who do make the trip out to this corner in the next year, year and a half -- hopefully they'll be able to notice us a bit more and make the trip out."

With months of delays are ahead,  many are excited for when this project ends and Highway 100 extends from Edgewood Rd all the way to Highway 30.
