Veterans can play free golf in August

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The City of Cedar Rapids announced on Monday that veterans will be offered a free round of golf between Monday, August 25 and Monday, September 1 as a part of Patriot Week.

In an effort to show appreciation for their service and sacrifices, the city will offer veterans a free round of golf and a cart at Ellis, Gardner and Twin Pines Golf Courses.

“Patriot Week is a way for the City and the businesses contributing to the event to demonstrate the gratitude that we have for our veterans each and every day of the year. A round of golf is a small token, but it is something we hope will give our veterans some relaxation and enjoyment in appreciation of the commitment they have shown to our country,” Council member Ann Poe said in a written statement.

All active duty, honorably discharged veterans, along with retired National Guard and reserves are eligible to pick up a certificate for their round of golf at the Linn County Veterans Administration Office, located at 1240 26th Ave Ct SW.

Twelve sponsors, the City of Cedar Rapids, CRST International, 7G Distributing, Rockwell Collins, Alliant Energy, Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust, IBEW Local 405, Diamond V Mills, Eastern Iowa All Veterans Memorial, Raining Rose, Transamerica and Rinderknecht General Contractors, donated $13,500 to offset the cost of the golf rounds.

As a part of Patriot Week, a fundraising golf tournament will be held on Sunday, August 24th at Gardner Golf Course to raise funds for the Folds of Honor Foundation which provides educational scholarships for veterans’ family members. To participate in the Folds of Honor Golf Tournament, call Gardner Golf Course at 286-5586.
