Harrington wins title at junior nationals

FARGO (KWWL) -

Two-time state champion Marcus Harrington defeated Oklahoma commit Andrew Dixon 7-2 on Saturday to claim the 220 pound championship at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals.

The former Waterloo West star stormed through the competition all weekend, defeating his seven opponents by a total score of 72-5. Harrington became the state of Iowa's first champ at the junior nationals in 2 years.

He'll wrestle at Iowa State next season.

Two other Iowans gained All-American status. Waverly-Shell Rock's Bryce Steiert finished 4th at 160 pounds, while teammate Spencer Derifield finished 5th at 170. Cedar Falls wrestler Cassy Herkelman took 2nd at 139 pounds in the women's division.

    The University of Northern Iowa is represented by seven members on the 2017 Missouri Valley Football Conference's preseason squad as announced by the league office on Monday. Senior defensive back Malcolm Washington (Houston, Texas) and senior linebacker Jared Farley (Cedar Falls, Iowa) were each named to the first team heading into the 2017 season.
