Julien Dubuque Bridge opens ahead of schedule

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Julien Dubuque Bridge, which connects Dubuque to East Dubuque, Illinois, reopened Saturday at 4 p.m. That's more than four and a half days ahead of schedule, according to the Iowa DOT.

The bridge was closed early Monday morning to replace expansion joints, as well as conduct other minor repairs.

The contractor faced a penalty of $20,000 per day if the bridge was closed past the 10 days scheduled.

However, because the bridge opened ahead of schedule, the contractor will receive an extra $90,000 as incentive.

Construction will continue on the bridge for several months, but all lanes of traffic will be open during construction
