RAGBRAI riders share surprises from route

SUMNER (KWWL) -

Cyclists pulled into Independence throughout the day on Friday for their last overnight stop at RAGBRAI.

This is the third time Independence has served as an overnight stop in the ride's 42 years.

Bicyclists say there have been a few surprises along this year's route.

Mark Stegen of Nora Springs has ridden the ride 23 times.

"You never know what you'll see!" he said.

"A town did some all-star wrestling. Never seen that before which is pretty good entertainment," he said. "I seen a couple mermaids...that was kind of bizarre to me," he added.

Jacob Goodwin of New Albany, Ind., said the best part of his first RAGBRAI was seeing the whole state come together for a bike ride.

Another bicyclist, Charlie Pecaut of Ames, called RAGBRAI a "party on wheels."

He said he saw RAGBRAI riders get married in Clear Lake.

"All kinds of people and all kinds of things happen on RAGBRAI," he said.
