Health Plus: Heat safety tips

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Doug Francis sums up the popular phrase from this week: "It is hot."

Francis and his wife take their grandchildren to the pool when temperatures soar, and he himself, has to stay cool, too.

"Take short breaks and try to stay hydrated, drink plenty of water," Francis said.

Cheri Purdy manages rehabilitation and wellness with Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. She says the key to staying safe in the heat is staying hydrated.

"Room temperature is best for you on an extremely hot day, because it goes down easier for the system to just absorb and take in," Purdy said.

Health specialists also say clothing plays a significant factor. Purdy recommends clothing that breathes, like a dry-fit material, which helps the skin breathe even during sweating.

Purdy also said during an exercise, like RAGBRAI, it's important to listen to your body. A severe headache, nausea, or cramping of the stomach or legs are signs of heat exhaustion and heat fatigue.

Health experts say to remember to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks and slow down if needed.
