RAGBRAI rolls into Waverly on Thursday

WAVERLY (KWWL) -

It's only right to go All Knight -- that's the slogan -- figuratively, and literally -- painted all over the town of Waverly as it anxiously awaits cyclists.

RAGBRAI riders head to the home of Wartburg College from Mason City on Thursday, trekking roughly 66 miles. Cyclists will pass through towns including Marble Rock, Greene and Clarksville on their way.

The Waverly RAGBRAI Committee started preparing for the crowd about five months ago, and said it's fully prepared for the tens of thousands of cyclists. The town's population is expected to triple in the next 24 hours.

Riders will find entertainment both downtown and on the Wartburg campus, along with vendors galore.

Heidi Solheim, Waverly's RAGBRAI Committee Chair, said everything from Thai food, to lasagna, to pickle poppers will be offered along with a beverage garden.

The last time Waverly was an overnight host for RAGBRAI was in 1999.

Cyclists will spend the night in Waverly Thursday night and head to Independence Friday.

The 42nd annual RAGBRAI will end Saturday in Guttenberg.
