RAGBRAI riders hit halfway point in Mason City

The Schweigers of Osage couldn't have asked for a better day to welcome in RAGBRAI riders into Mason City.

They brought their granddaughter, Emma, with them.

"It's fun...they come in big bunches you know...it's fun," said Jill Schweiger.

About a dozen volunteers from First Covenant Church in Mason City also welcomed thousands of bicyclists to town on Wednesday.

Myrna Long was one of the volunteers handing out more than 2,000 free bottles of water the congregation collected.

"They don't have to buy anything. We're just happy to do this," Long said.

Long said she wants the RAGBRAI riders to have a good impression of people in Mason City.

Thousands of bicyclists set up shop at area campgrounds and in peoples' backyards.

Wes Jennings, a RAGBRAI rider from Cleveland, Ohio, said people in Mason City were welcoming.

"It's just so much fun. There's so many people to talk to, and I like the chaos of the huge crowds that we're always a part of and how the people are so welcoming," he said.
