Indian Creek Nature Center launches campaign for new campus

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Indian Creek Nature Center launched their Amazing Space campaign on Tuesday.

The $6.9 million campaign aims to pay for a new campus, building and endowment.

To date, the campaign has received $1 million from The Hall-Perrine Foundation, $750,000 from Bob and Beth Allsop, and $500,000 from the Aegon Transamerica Foundation.

A $200,000 gift from United Fire Group was announced before the launch.

The new campus, including a 12,000-square-foot main building, will be on Otis Road SE, about a half mile from the current location. It will contain more than 15 separate outdoor elements, including a new community amphitheater, classroom, butterfly house and recreational areas.

The new building will contain exhibits, an educational wing, and an auditorium and kitchen space.

During construction, crews will undertake the Living Building Challenge certification which challenges them to go above LEED and create one of the most sustainable buildings in the world.

The new center plans to generate all of their electricity on site with solar panels, prohibit unsustainable or dangerous materials from being used in construction, and heat and cool the building with a geothermal system.

The project is expected to break ground in spring 2015.
