The former police chief of a northern Iowa city is fighting to get his job back after being demoted.

Former Nashua Police Chief Ernie Willsher and his attorney argued Monday night at city council that he be reinstated.

KIMT-TV reports that Willsher's lawyer Sarah Reindl says he was demoted last month after he took a medical leave. A councilman says Willsher was not performing his duties.

Reindl says Willsher has filed a civil rights complaint and they hope to sue the city for wrongful dismissal.

Officer Paul Becthold filled in for Willsher while he was on leave. Becthold has been appointed interim chief of the four-member department.

Nashua has about 1,700 residents.
