Strawberry Point preps for RAGBRAI passthrough

STRAWBERRY POINT (KWWL) -

In Strawberry Point, painted bicycle wheels line the road to the Franklin Hotel, forming a route they hope many hungry riders will follow when the Register's Annual Great Ride Across Iowa passes through town on Saturday.

"We think it's going to be a good day for us," said Doug Schmidt, owner of the hotel.

This is the first time RAGBRAI will come through the town. Schmidt said they plan to host a buffet for riders, in addition to a bloody mary bar. They hope to feed 300 riders in the morning.

"We're hoping to double our business," he said.

That's the plan at least, but it's not without challenges.

"It's kind of a small kitchen, as you can see," he said, gesturing to the grill. "So we're hoping to have all our kitchen spaces full of food."

Out front, a historic tandem bicycle was installed. In 1964, two men from Strawberry Point raced it all the way from Iowa to Dallas, Texas.

Schmidt said he's ready for the riders. He said swing by, he'll bring the pasta.

"Gotta give them a lot of energy, a lot of carbohydrates," he said. "That's what I've heard I guess."
