A Dubuque County 7-year-old got the surprise of a lifetime Saturday afternoon. Kate Frett was born with a serious heart condition. The 7-year-old has undergone heart surgery 5 times.

"It's a very complex and a very serious thing. When she was born the doctors weren't really certain how long she was going to have," James Frett, Kate's father said.

Due to the condition, there are times when Kate is confined to her bedroom.

"She can have periods of time when she has to stay at home because of illnesses that can effect her and actually very dangerous for her," James Frett said.

Ann Decker is the local Director of Special Spaces Dubuque. The organization creates bedroom makeovers for children who face life threatening illnesses.

"It's just nice for them to have that special space to come home to and be able to recover, heal and just find peace," Decker said.

On Saturday, Decker and dozens of volunteers created gave Kate's bedroom a makeover.

"She loves Hello Kitty and princesses and we've managed to make the two of them come together and just make a magical room," Decker said.

The room is funded through sponsors. Kate's room is the third local child to receive a Special Spaces makeover.

"It's nice to give her something to be able to get through, as a kind of repayment for everything that she has to go through all the time. So many things, so many challenges, and at the same time she is such an inspiration," James Frett said.
