Hampton man charged with passport fraud

Posted: Updated:

A Hampton man is facing charges of passport fraud and false statements.

Abel Hernandez-Labra, 43, was charged in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on July 15. The criminal complaint alleges that he assumed the identity of a U.S. citizen by fraudulently obtaining the victim's birth certificate.

Investigators believe he then used that information to apply for a drivers license and passport. He is charged with lying to authorities during the investigation.

Hernandez-Labra is being held in Cedar Rapids without bond.
