Guttenberg gearing up for RAGBRAI with bicycle sculptures

GUTTENBERG (KWWL) -

Guttenberg is gearing up for two days of RAGBRAI visitors, as Guttenberg is the final city on this year's route.

It's bikes, bikes everywhere right now in the small Mississippi River town, as part of the Guttenberg RAGBRAI Committee's Recycle Bicycle community-wide art project.

"The idea is to use either bicycle parts and create some sort of a sculpture - and it can be any size or shape - or use a bike itself and decorate the bike. A functional bike," committee co-chair Nancy McClellan said Tuesday.

People throughout the community are participating in the project.

"It's really been fun to see," McClellan said. "It's businesses, it's community members, it's everybody's just got involved, and they're still popping up. We had probably three new ones show up just last week. They don't tell us, they just show up, and then we run down and take a picture and put them on our Facebook page."

The committee created a poster with about 50 of the bicycle creations and is selling copies for $12 a piece. Proceeds will benefit the city's Umbrella Arts Group, which came up with the idea for the Recycle Bicycle Project.

"It's wonderful because we really wanted to get RAGBRAI out there and to put it in front of people's faces," McClellan said, "so that they remember that it's coming and they know the bigness of it, the magnitude of it."

She said the city expects its first big wave of cyclists Friday, as people drop off their vehicles at the end of the route. Cyclists will return to Guttenberg on the 26th and dip their front tires in the Mighty Mississippi.
