CHARLES CITY (KWWL) -

PAWS Humane Society Director Julie Taylor says a stolen dog managed to run away from the person who stole him.

The pit bull, Pete, was stolen from the shelter's kennel on Saturday, July 6.

Taylor says the dog wandered into a yard of a farmer near Charles City Monday. According to Taylor, Pete appeared to have been tied up with twine, but it looked like he was able to chew his way out and run away. Taylor says Pete is worn out and tired, but not injured.

On Monday night, PAWS posted a note on the organization's Facebook page saying, “A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible! We wouldn't have been able to do it without your help getting the word out there! He is currently in a foster home snoozing on the couch, happy to be back with the PAWS volunteers.”

Taylor echoed the sentiment on the phone Tuesday, adding that she was happy to see people treating the missing pit bull “the same as any breed”.

Taylor says police are still investigating, and it's still not clear if charges will be filed.
