The former Masonville city clerk is heading to federal prison for stealing more than $80,000.

Christine King, 42, from Strawberry Point, was sentenced to 21 months in prison on Monday. She pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud on May 5.

Court documents show that King admitted to issuing herself fraudulent payroll and expense reimbursement checks from July 2002 through October 2011. Records also show that she inflated city bank account balances on reports provided to the city council and the state auditor.

At her sentencing hearing, King admitted to stealing $81,524.24 from the city and also admitted responsibility for the $11,070.57 bill from the Iowa State Auditor to Masonville for the audit that revealed her fraud.

In addition to the prison term, King was ordered to make $82,594.81 in restitution to Masonville and $10,000 in restitution to an insurance company.

King is scheduled to surrender to the United States Marshal on August 4 to begin her prison sentence.
