North Liberty couple's backyard continues flooding, wants city's help

Posted: Updated:

Ryan and Renee McGinnis say they are devastated. They've been living in their North Liberty home for only 14 months.

Every time it rains the McGinnis' say their backyard lawn looks like a lake, and the problem is still happening.

"Devastating, the whole situation happened three days after we moved into this house," said Ryan McGinnis.

The couple have taken videos and pictures that shows the water so high that it surrounds an electrical box and spills into the street.

"Clearly, something wrong," said McGinnis. "With big rains and this drain will be completely overwhelmed with water, and it looks like there's a river behind our house."

McGinnis says he's contacted city leaders and while they came out to replace a fence around the drain, the city tells him it's doing what it's supposed to.

"Which is surprising to me considering we're still having problems, and we're still getting a foot of water in our basement."

The McGinnis say they really don't know what to do because they've had furniture in their basement that's been ruined because of the water seeping in.

They say they are not trying to point fingers, they just want something to be done about all the water that continues to flood their backyard.

"I really just wanted some attention brought to this. I figured if I contacted you guys maybe this will show them more that we're in dire need for help, we just want help," said McGinnis.

KWWL tried reaching out to North Liberty leaders and have not heard back.
