Iowa inmate Rasberry Williams released from prison

Posted: Updated:

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - Iowa officials say a Waterloo man whose life sentence for murder was commuted by the governor has been released from prison.

Records show Rasberry Williams was paroled effective Monday. The state Department of Corrections confirmed the information. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (http://bit.ly/1oVXBT7 ) Williams' release comes after the Iowa Board of Parole granted his parole in April.

Williams was convicted of first-degree murder in the 1974 shooting death of a man outside a Waterloo pool hall. Over the decades, supporters argued that Williams had been a model inmate.

Gov. Terry Branstad commuted Williams' sentence last year to life with possibility of parole. That helped move his case to the parole board.

The newspaper reports Williams will be paroled to a care facility, but additional information was not released.
