Dead mayflies litter Dubuque Saturday

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The streets of Dubuque were littered with dead mayflies Saturday after the first hatch of the year. Experts said high river levels brought a late hatch this year.

Mayflies, also known as fish flies, hatch, breed, lay eggs and die. The experts say they're a sign of a healthy river, since a polluted river wouldn't be able to support the larvae.
