LINN COUNTY (KWWL) - Crystal Gaffney was just 29 years old when her body was found on a rural Linn County road.

"Crystal was a good person," said John Maynard, Crystal's uncle. "She didn't deserve to die, and especially the way she went."

According to court documents, Shaun Hogan assaulted Gaffney, causing multiple injuries that lead to her death on Linn Buchanan Road in Walker.

Hogan appeared in court by video conference. Gaffney's uncle shook his head in the courtroom while watching Hogan.

"I wanted to see if he had any remorse for taking my niece's life," said Maynard. "He had none. He smiled. I mean, what's that say?'"

The judge set a $1 million cash bond for Hogan, and scheduled his next court appearance for July 21.

"I just want to make sure he gets what he gets," said Maynard.

In court, Hogan was wearing a vest. Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner says a suicide vest is placed on all inmates potentially facing life in prison. Those are removed once cleared by medical staff.
