Pesticide spill prompts soil excavation

Posted: Updated:
SHELBY COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources confirms a pesticide spill occurred near Earling in Shelby County.

Authorities believe it happened Thursday night. They found herbicide was leaking from a sprayer, and had reached the side of the road. An unknown amount flowed in a tributary of Picayune Creek. An investigation showed a United Western Coop employee let a hose come unplugged, leading to the spill.

The DNR estimates between 15 and 100 gallons of "sludge" spilled. The coop excavated 20 cubic yard of soil to prevent damage to the environment.

There is no evidence of dead or distressed fish in the creek, but the DNR will continue to monitor the area.
