Cedar Rapids couple's invention hits national market, others may have chance

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Packable Pails, invented and distributed from Iowa, were featured on the Today Show on NBC on July 3.

The collapsible beach pails were invented by Tom and Melissa Reed of Cedar Rapids after their family took a trip to Myrtle Beach.

"We were excited to show our son the ocean," said Melissa Reed in a statement. "We had planned for everything to go to the beach right after landing in Myrtle Beach. When we got there, he asked for some toys to play with in the sand. It was that moment that the idea for Packable Pails was developed."

Packable Pails are marketed as a gadget with uses for making sand castles, collecting seashells, playing in the backyard sandbox and serving snacks.

The Reeds say their product easily packs into a beach bag or suitcase, and their product will soon be available through major retailers across the United States.

Meanwhile, other Iowa inventors may have the opportunity to be featured on a national spotlight, as casting calls for the show "Shark Tank" are set to take place on Monday in Des Moines at the Iowa Events Center beginning at 9 a.m.
