Benefit for brain-injured Epworth man to be held Saturday

Posted: Updated:

A benefit will happen Saturday for an Epworth man severely injured last year at a notoriously dangerous Dubuque County intersection.

On the afternoon of Aug. 26, Jeff Ernzen was riding his motorcycle eastbound on U.S. Highway 20 when he was hit by a car at the Swiss Valley Road intersection.

Ernzen survived, but suffered a brain injury from which he is still recovering.

Ernzen's family organized a benefit, which will take place Saturday.

"Rehab has kept (Ernzen) a long way from home," the event's flier says. "Not only has the family endured rising medical costs, they have endured loss of wages from needing to travel long distances to see Jeff."

The family has also advocated to make that intersection safer. In the past decade there have been dozens of motor vehicle accidents within the half-mile stretch of Hwy. 20 between Swiss Valley Road and North Cascade Road.

The benefit starts at noon on Saturday at Dirty Ernie's in Farley, with a motorcycle and car ride.

At 5 p.m. at Farley Memorial Hall, there will be food and auctions, as well as live music.

For more information, people can contact Ernzen's sister Angie Recker at 563-599-5692.
