Shaun Hogan showed up at stepfather's door

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

When Shaun Hogan showed up at the door of Calvin Jones' apartment, he didn't know what to think.

"He just said he (expletive-deleted)-ed up," Jones, Hogan's stepfather, said. "I asked, 'what did you do?' He almost broke down and cried, and just said I (expletive-deleted)-ed up, Calvin."

Jones let him spend the night at his place on University Avenue in Waterloo. In the morning, he realized Hogan was wanted by police in connection to an AMBER Alert, and turned him in.

Now, Hogan has been arrested, and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Crystal Gaffney.

Hogan is a man with a complicated past, according to others close to him. He was convicted of false imprisonment in 2003, for an incident where he rammed the car of a woman he was dating, pulling her out of the car by her hair, and forcing her into his vehicle, preventing her from calling for help.

Jones said Gaffney's death is a tragedy.

"I feel bad, man," he said. "I feel bad for the girl that's dead, and I feel bad for the kids, because they don't have a momma now."

Hogan will make his first appearance in court Friday morning in Cedar Rapids.
