Chicago Bears donating $50K to UW-Platteville tornado relief

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. (KWWL) -

The NFL's Chicago Bears are donating $50,000 to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the wake of an EF-2 tornado that ripped through the southwest side of campus in June.

The check presentation will happen at 2 p.m. Friday at UW-Platteville's Pioneer Stadium and will be open to the public.

On Mon., June 16, two tornadoes tore through Platteville. One of them, an EF-1, ripped the roof off an apartment complex in the city's northeast side.

The other tornado, however, was more ferocious. It was an EF-2 and pummeled its way through Platteville's southwest side, injuring at least five people, destroying 12 houses and seriously damaging more than two dozen other homes, businesses and buildings.

In the wake of the damage, UW-Platteville set up the Pioneer Relief Fund, to help staff members and students displaced or otherwise negatively impacted by the tornado.

The Chicago Bears called UW-Platteville their summer home from 1984 to 2001. This summer marks 30 years since the Bears' first training camp in southwest Wisconsin.

People who want to attend the check presentation Friday afternoon should enter from Markee Drive, where the visitors' bleachers used to be, before the tornado damaged them.
