The man accused of killing a Waterloo woman had his initial appearance in Linn County court today.

Shaun Hogan  sat still for most of the appearance but at some points seemed to smile, appearing by video conference, and his attorney did the talking during court.

Authorities believe Hogan deliberately killed Crystal Gaffney on Linn-Buchanan Road in Walker, assaulting her and causing multiple injuries leading to her death.

Gaffney's uncle, John Maynard, was in court for the proceedings, shaking his head during Hogan's appearance.

Hogan's next appearance is scheduled for July 21. His bond was set at a $1 million, cash-only bond.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office says Shaun Hogan has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of 29-year-old Crystal Marie Gaffney of Waterloo.

Hogan, who was apparently found Thursday afternoon in Waterloo by officers from DCI and the Waterloo Police, is being held without bond in the Linn County Jail and is scheduled to make an initial court appearance at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner says an autopsy shows that Gaffney died as a result of head trauma.

Gaffney is the mother of three young girls Hogan is suspected of abducting Wednesday night. One of the girls is the daughter of Hogan and Gaffney.

The Linn County Sheriff's Office confiscated a silver van from a Waterloo address where a man apparently lived with the children he is suspected of briefly abducting Wednesday night.

Linn County Sheriff Brian Gardner would not tell KWWL why the silver van was confiscated from 437 Edwards Drive in Waterloo. Waterloo Police also deferred questions to Gardner.

Friends of the family say it's where Shaun Hogan lived with his 8-month-old daughter and his mother.

Hogan is suspected of taking his daughter and two older girls Wednesday night, causing a brief AMBER Alert to be issued. All three girls were safely recovered, but Hogan is still being sought.

Hogan is also wanted for questioning in the death of a Walker woman.

Authorities are still seeking a person of interest in the case of both a suspicious death in Walker as well as a Wednesday night AMBER Alert involving three children.

Shaun Michael Hogan is being sought by the Linn County Sheriff's Office because they believe he may have additional information about the incident.

Hogan is described as a 36-year-old black man, standing about 6 feet, 6 inches tall and weighing approximately 250 pounds. Authorities no longer believe he is driving a red Pontiac Grand Am.

If you know of Hogan's whereabouts, you're asked to call (319) 398-3911.

Investigators have made "tentative identification" on the woman whose body was found in Walker, but are awaiting positive identification from an autopsy scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the State Medical Examiner's Office.

Authorities say they hope to release more information Thursday.

UPDATE, 11:15 p.m.: Authorities have canceled the AMBER Alert for Black Hawk County. Waterloo Police officials confirm the three girls were found, and are safe. They say they're working with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation on the case.

Abduction suspect Shaun Hogan has not been caught.
