Hudson fire destroys hog building, firefighters save most pigs

HUDSON (AP) -

A farm owner says firefighters saved hundreds of pigs from a fire that destroyed one building and damaged another at the farm south of Waterloo, near Hudson.

Peggy Hoskins said Wednesday that no one was injured in Tuesday afternoon's blaze at the farm that she and her husband, Ron, own. She says they were inside their home when a trucker stopped by to say he thought one of the farm buildings was on fire.

The fire destroyed an empty hog nursery building and spread to another nearby that contained around 430 pigs. She says firefighters knocked down the flames, saving most of the animals. She says about 15 pigs died.

Peggy Hoskins says she thinks the fire was extinguished sometime before 4 p.m. The fire cause is being investigated.
