Councilman wants strip club to move

Posted: Updated:

Good fences may make good neighbors, but in this case, that might not cut it.

Waterloo Councilman Pat Morrissey wants Flirts Gentlemen's Club, right next door to the newly-constructed Cedar Valley SportsPlex, to move.

"I'd like to see that business not be there anymore," he said. "Not that it needs to be gone, but I think it needs to be somewhere else."

After 30 years with Child Protective Services, Morrissey said he has first-hand experience with how a business selling alcohol can endanger nearby children. That's why he voted --unsuccessfully -- to strip the Club's liquor license, and at Monday's council meeting, had questions for developer and owner Howard Allen. At the time of this writing, KWWL had reached out to Allen, but not heard back.

Flirts was on the block long before the SportsPlex was constructed. Morrissey says that doesn't matter.

"Because I think kids come first," he said.

However, it's not the only adult business in the neighborhood. Just a few blocks away is another club, Risque.

But right across the street is too close for Morrissey.

"I think that's totally fair," he said.
