City: Residents should not operate flood protection pumps

Posted: Updated:

City crews in Cedar Rapids are asking residents not to run flood pumps.

Recently, they've observed many incidents where residents are operating flood protection equipment, and they say that causes problems.

Some of the problems faced when residents use the city's flood protection equipment include pumps running out of fuel, areas filling up with water and flooding the pumps, and pumping too much water on the back side of sewer plugs allowing the full pressure of the river level to attempt to push plugs out of the pipes.

City workers say most pumps operate intermittently on a schedule necessary to maintain equipment and ensure proper flood protection.

City officials say sewer personnel have been on emergency shifts to maintain flood protection equipment 24 hours-a-day since the start of this season’s flooding.
