Freedom Festival continues despite elevated river

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Not even high river levels can stop the fun at Freedom Festival in Cedar Rapids.

All Independence Day events are continuing, closing down many streets downtown as the events take over several bridges.

That's despite the Cedar River being above flood stage. In fact, on Friday the levels were above 16 feet which is what the National Weather Service considers to be "major" flood stage for the city.

Originally, the river was set to be a few feet higher but then the projections changed.

When KWWL called Freedom Festival organizers, they said they never worried they'd have to cancel the 4th of July events.
