Safety in Shell Rock during Independence Day festivities

Posted: Updated:
SHELL ROCK (KWWL) -

For years, Shell Rock has been a popular location for Independence Day festivities.

With a parade, beer tent, fireworks and live music, its population increases significantly.

Last year, a 14 year-old boy was hit by a truck before the fireworks display in Shell Rock.

Organizers expect this year's crowd to be even larger, so they're stepping up safety enforcement all around.

Deputies from the Butler County Sheriff's Office are working with local police and fire personnel as well as the Iowa State Patrol.

Shell Rock's Assistant Fire Chief said he urges people to be extra cautious of pedestrians.

He said they're prepared for just about any situation, but hopes people exercise patience when it comes to making their way through the crowds.
