CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

After 47 years, 344 victories, 25 playoff appearances -- one state title and four state runner-up finishes -- Pat Mitchell is stepping down as the head football coach at Cedar Falls High School.

In January, Mitchell discovered he had prostate cancer and at 75 years old, realized he doesn't have the energy to devote to his head coaching responsibilities. Mitchell has shared the head coaching duties the past nine seasons with Brad Remmert, and Mitchell says he won't be with the team day-to-day but he will serve as a consultant to the program.

"When you get on the bus one day you know you're going to get off," Mitchell said. "Sometimes you get off on your own. Sometimes you get kicked off. Sometimes they won't let you on. It's my time to get off the bus.

"I got cancer in January. I'm doing OK, but you don't know where it's going. One thing leads to another and I know physically there's no way I can go and do the duties I have to do for three straight months.

"The one thing I'm going to miss are the players. I miss them already. That part will be difficult but on the other hand, I've never been able to go to McGregor and look at the leaves with my wife or have lunch. Never could do that."

Remmert will take over the full-fledged responsibilities of the Cedar Falls football program after serving as co-head coach the past nine years.
