Family escapes serious injury when tree falls on van

FRANKVILLE (KWWL) - Storms have downed hundreds of trees in recent days, but one that fell in northeast Iowa is not being linked to severe weather.

One man considers it a lucky break because no one was seriously hurt.

The Stein family from Minnesota was on their way through northeast Iowa on Saturday when a tree came crashing down. They were in Frankville, which is northwest of Postville, when the tree fell right on top of the van. There was no warning.

Winneshiek County Emergency Management Director Bruce Goetsch says there was a moderate breeze at the time, but that was it.

The couple and their three kids were inside. They were all taken to the hospital for cuts and bruises. KWWL was told they should be fine.

The driver, Daniel Stein, told emergency crews he had just a split second before the tree came crashing down and then everything stopped. He wondered if he had used up all of his luck.

There were no storms, but it's possible recent rains may have had something to do with it. KWWL was told since the ground is so saturated, it's possible that moisture was too much for the tree to take.
