Tornado, trees damage Traer homes

Even though his street was closed Tuesday, Lee Wigens said he's not usually wary of the weather.

The EF-2 tornado that ripped through Traer Monday evening though, was different.

“I was looking up at the sky, and noticed that the clouds were starting to move in a circular fashion,” Wigens said. “I thought, 'woah, that's bad.'”

That's when he heard it coming.

“It sounded just like a continuous thunder roll, it just thundered all the time,” he said. “After a little bit I thought 'woah,' and the house shuddered a little bit and I thought something happened.”

The tree in his front yard had come crashing down on the roof, one of hundreds downed across Tama County.

“I wouldn't say afraid, but I was a little apprehensive,” Wigens said. “You know, I really didn't like that. I'm not one of those that likes to go into the basement all the time like a lot of people do.”

The same goes for Edith Paustien next door.

“My daughter called me and said, 'Mom, you'd better get in the basement,' so instead of going all the way down, I went and sat on the steps.”

A tree fell on her roof as well, causing thousands of dollars of damage, in her estimation.

“I wouldn't doubt it one bit,” she said.

But for Wigens, those trees are a loss all their own.

“Losing them is kind of like losing an old friend,” he said. “They've been around for 30 years.”

But the cleanup is still a prominent reminder of how powerful the storm really was.

“It just makes you go 'woah!;” Wigens said. “How did that happen?”
