Western Dubuque HS gets new head varsity football coach

Posted: Updated:

Western Dubuque High School will have a new head varsity football coach this upcoming school year.

Justin Penner is coming from Mason City Community School District, where he taught health and physical education to seventh-through-twelfth-graders for four years, in addition to being the head varsity football coach and seventh grade boys basketball coach.

Penner is replacing Brian Kuhle, who left to take the job of athletic director/assistant principal at Hempstead High School in the Dubuque Community School District.

In addition to head varsity football coach, Penner will also be a physical education teacher for the district, pending school board members' approval at their next meeting.

"Mason City, one of the smallest 4A programs, has won only 21 games in the past 10 years. Penner was 8-30 at Mason City in four years as head coach," according to a release from the Western Dubuque Community School District. "Mason City plays in a conference which includes football powers Ankeny and Dowling along with 3A powers Waverly Shell Rock and Clear Lake."

Prior to working for Mason City's schools, Penner was head varsity football coach and assistant track and field coach at Kuemper Catholic Schools in Carroll. In his five years there, his teams compiled a 39 and 17 record. He also taught middle school reading and language arts, as well as elementary physical education.

"Penner’s teams are known for an aggressive style," Tuesday's announcement said.

He also has coaching experience at Beckman Catholic High School in Dyersville, where he was an assistant varsity football coach, freshman boys basketball coach and assistant track and field coach.

Penner plans on meeting with his coaches and players early next week.
