In-home daycare operator protects kids from storm

Posted: Updated:

In La Porte City, the storm moved through with strong winds, knocking down trees and causing power outages; it caused some tense moments at one in-home daycare.

Alisha Evans helped remove part of the roof from her house. It's not her roof. It's from the used car dealership's building across Highway 218. She was inside her in-home daycare with 9 kids huddled in the basement.

Alisha says "I had a bunch of plastic tote lids and I had the kids cover their heads and lay down on the ground and then I heard a loud crashing noise, so I laid down on top of all 9 of my daycare kids, 4 of my own, and 5 other daycare kids."

When she emerged, she saw the metal roof up against house, and then got help cleaning it up. But she's not able to assess the damage to her house until the roof and the wood are removed. The good news is no-one was hurt.

"They're all fairly young," Alisha says. "They all got pretty anxious once they realized what happened but they're all Ok. They're safe. I kept them safe."
