Cedar Rapids Police and Fire responded to over 300 calls for service as severe thunderstorms caused flash flooding in the city last night, City Public Safety spokesman Greg Buelow said.
Over 20 swift water rescues were performed and no serious injuries were reported.
Emergency crews also responded to at least three homes with possible structural damage. Several other homes have significant water damage.
Among the road closures, Highway 1 North of Mount Vernon is closed due to a collapsed bridge, and pavement failure has forced authorities to shut down Meadowbrook Drive SE from Forest Drive SE to Washington Avenue SE.
Severe storms are still possible Monday, adding to the risk of flash flooding in Cedar Rapids.
Citizens with stalled or disabled vehicles due to flash flooding are asked to call Cedar Rapids Police at 319-286-5491.
Cedar Rapids Police and Fire warn that flash flooding can be dangerous and moves very quickly. Do not drive into flooded areas.
