Neighbors say church service is too loud

Posted: Updated:

Some Iowa City residents say a church's music and worship has gotten out of hand.

Police have been called several times to the New Creations International Church on Court Street after several calls of noise complaints.

“I believe in the freedom to worship and join together, but I think you have to be conscientious of your neighborhood as well,” said Michael Pacha.

Pacha lives close to a dozen homes from the church and says he can hear the music from there. He says the pastor’s sermon can get pretty rambunctious.

Every Sunday morning around the 11 o’clock hour members start flowing into the church, and they say their praise flows out.

“I wish I could please everybody, but we can’t,” said the pastor, Anthony Smith. “I would hope that this all comes to a good and peaceful end.”

However, police were called out to the church at least twice so far this month.

Smith says they’re worship is essential and there are not limits.

Currently, the church building is without air conditioning so the windows have to be open.

“Even with the air conditioning, if that noise is at that pitch, I think it will bother their neighbors,” said Pacha.

However, other neighbors like the sounds and say it’s not even loud.

“I think it’s great, I really do,” said Rex Smolek. “I’m glad to see the church active again; it’s good to see the people out there.”

The pastor says he wants and prays that his church is a benefit to the neighborhood, and not a bother.

He says they’re working to get their air conditioning fixed, to hopefully mute some of the noise.

The noise ordinance in Iowa City does not allow amplified sound in residential areas except for events held at churches or schools.

The church has nearly 100 members, and has not been cited in violation of the ordinance.

“All it takes is one person to complain and we make a mountain out of a molehill, as far as I’m concerned,” said Smolek.
