Cedar Rapids sees seven bank robberies in less than two months

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Police cars outside banks is getting to be a more common scene in Cedar Rapids.

"We, you know, are very actively seeking the connections and working with the FBI," said Wayne Jerman, Cedar Rapids Police Chief.

Six bank branches have been robbed this year -- one hit twice. Three belonged to U.S. Bank, two to Guaranty Bank, with each company seeing a robbery this week. Executives with those banks told us they have no comment.

Police officers say that really, any bank could be a target so we called other banks and credit unions. They told us they train for these types of situations, though they wouldn't go into detail.

Officers say the best thing banks can do is make sure their security systems are working.

"It's key to have the very latest technology of all their security systems but primarily their video surveillance," said Jerman.

Officers say bank employees and customers should do what the robber asks -- that's the best way to stay safe.

"I don't want anybody to do anything that would put their safety at risk," said Jerman. "I prefer that if the robber was to complete their act and leave and lock the door behind them."

If you live or work near a bank, police recommend keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. They say robbers usually scout the area before committing the crime.

There was one bank robbery in Cedar Rapids in all of 2013, compared to the seven so far this year.
