Grant will help save courthouse clock tower

Posted: Updated:

A grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa will help save the clock at the Benton County courthouse in Vinton.

The grant adds up to $32,084, but to earn it, the Benton County Clock Restoration Task Force had to also raise half that amount in matching funds.

The Benton County Courthouse started being built in 1905, and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. It includes a bronze bell, which weighs 1,500 pounds and is pitched in B-flat.

The county says the bell was silenced in the early 1980s when its cabling was disconnected. The clock stopped working in 2008.

The committee to bring back the clock and bell is now working on a timeline for restoration. The committee expects to have work finished by next spring.
