People react to possible College Square Mall foreclosure

Posted: Updated:

Are indoor malls a thing of the past?

Some people in the Cedar Valley have noticed business trailing off at the College Square Mall, as it currently has 18 empty storefronts.

Over the past several years, large retailers have shut their doors and moved elsewhere; Viking Rd. has several businesses that used to call the College Square Mall home.

Local and chain businesses, though, still surround the mall along University Ave.; if the attraction were to foreclose, money-making could be threatened at nearby establishments.

Some say they haven't shopped at the College Square Mall in months and can find what they need elsewhere.

"Pretty much any store I'd want to go to has their store away from the mall right now, like the Maurice's, Scheels, Target, Wal-Mart; those are the ones I usually go to," Amanda Payne said of Cedar Falls.

Others, however, say there's still the convenience factor.

"On breaks and things like that, we'll go to the mall and shop, check out stores, maybe buy a gift for someone's birthday. If this wasn't here, we'd have to go to Waterloo or somewhere else," Cedar Falls resident Kurt Bakula said.

KWWL contacted GK Development, the owner of the College Square Mall, to inquire further regarding the action toward foreclosure.

Questions were referred to property management company McKinley Inc. out of Michigan, but phone messages were not returned Thursday.
