Fairs and festivals are popping up all over eastern Iowa and that means: it's time for "fair food."
But Covenant Dietitian Mary Steffensmeier says be careful when you're ordering food at a fair, and try to avoid ordering the biggest thing available. "Whether it's a drink or a sandwich, those things really add up. A lot of that food at the fair is about 1000 calories each," Steffensmeier said.
Fair food certainly adds up quickly in calories. For example, one funnel cake is 760 calories and 44 grams of fat; a giant turkey leg is 1,136 calories and 54 grams of fat; fried cheese curds are 670 calories and 38 grams of fat; and pork ribs are 1,360 and 68 grams of fat. In fact, to work ribs off, you'll have to take 27,200 steps.
Steffensmeier says the first thing we should buy when we head to the fair is a big bottle of water.
