College Square stores keep moving to Viking Road

The College Square Mall area in Cedar Falls has lost a couple big business draws in the past 10 years.

Walmart and Scheels both moved from College Square to the development on Viking Road, joining Target, a new Menards, and many others.

Doug Powell has had his Edible Arrangements store in that area for a year and a half. He says business is great and the location next to the highway is exactly what he wants.

"When we did kind of the analysis for the area we just saw that a lot of things were going to be happening out here in the future, and we plan on being a part of that future," said Powell.

A couple of years ago, College Square Mall lost one of its largest businesses when Scheels moved near Highway 20 and 58.

Just recently, Culver's celebrated a grand opening in that area, McDonald's broke ground nearby, and crews continues to work on a strip mall which will include a Michaels arts and craft store.

At the Cedar Falls Tourism and Visitors Bureau, Kim Manning says research shows local retail spending across the state has held steady.

"The average travel party spends about $260 a day while they visit -- and of that, 11 percent of that is on retail shopping," said Manning.

As for the future, it doesn't seem development in this area is slowing down.

"Plan on staying here, and keep growing," said Powell.
