Gallon of milk to a gallon of gas: consumer prices rising

Posted: Updated:

Whether it's waiting in the check-out line or paying at the pump, the U.S. Department of Labor reports consumer prices rose across the board last month.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for consumers jumped by 0.4 percent in May.

Consumers see everything from food to energy wearing a heftier price tag. Prices of meats, poultry and dairy are pinching shoppers' wallets; dairy products experienced a 0.6 increase last month, its seventh consecutive increase.

Salad-eaters aren't off the hook either, as prices for fruits and vegetables continued to rise in May by 1.1 percent.

Prices at the pump follow suit; AAA reports the national average for a gallon of gas is currently $3.68, the highest price for early summer in six years.

"I have a big old truck and I actually just bought myself a little car to commute back and forth to work because of the gas prices," said consumer Amy Schorenberg.

"I care for my Iowa beef, and that is something with these prices I've had to cut back on," said William Gabbard of Waterloo.

The U.S. Department of Labor also reports airfares increased last month by 5.8 percent, the largest increase since July 1999.
