National HIV testing day is Friday, June 27

National HIV Testing Day is Friday, June 27, and in recognition of the day, Planned Parenthood of the Heartland will be offering 50 percent off HIV tests at health centers in Nebraska and Iowa.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of HIV, STD and Hepatitis there were 122 HIV diagnoses in the state of Iowa in 2013, up from 117 in 2012. The department also estimates there were 2,100 people living with HIV or AIDS in the state of Iowa as of December 31, 2013.

Nationally, the CDC estimates there are more than 1.1 million people living with HIV in the United States, with more than 15 percent of those living with the virus unaware.
