The E.B. Lyons Interpretive Area Expansion Project will kick off Wednesday at the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area.
The $1.44 million project will expand the existing E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center, adding an Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible trail from the current building to a new trail along a prairie with an overlook. It will also include two new parking lots to serve the trail, a shelter, a restroom, a drinking fountain, a kiosk and expanded parking near the nature center building.
Wednesday's event will take place at 1 p.m. on the project site, which is west of the Interpretive Center and north of the road. Tours of the planned expansion site will be available after a short groundbreaking program. People can park at the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center, at 8991 Old Bellevue Road.
The city of Dubuque, Friends of the Mines of Spain and the Iowa Department Natural Resources are joining to host this groundbreaking ceremony.
