Faith, family and football: Iowans remember a coaching legend

Posted: Updated:
PARKERSBURG (KWWL) -

Tuesday marks the five-year anniversary of the murder of Aplington-Parkersburg High School football coach, Ed Thomas.

Thomas was shot and killed June 24, 2009 in the school's makeshift weight room. The shooter found responsible for Thomas' death was Mark Becker, who had played football under Coach Thomas.

Those who knew the father, coach and teacher say he represented far more than just a ball game. His son, Aaron Thomas, described him as a leader of faith in the community.

"The elder of the First Congregational Church in Parkersburg, a man of deep faith who touched many lives. Not just on the football field, but the thing he talked about most was making people better young men."

Ed Thomas was named the NFL High School Football Coach of the Year in 2005, and sent four players to the NFL.

Former players and people of the community say he had one motto: be a good person.

Thomas was 58 years old when he was pronounced dead at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo.

KWWL requested to interview Mark Becker, the man responsible for Thomas' death, who is currently at the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Coralville. Becker declined to interview.

Stay with KWWL for continuing coverage of the Ed Thomas anniversary.
