River residents watching the Wapsi

Posted: Updated:

The O'Briens have lived on the river for a long time.

"The ol' Wapsi," Dick O'Brien laughed.

They moved into their home on the banks of the Wapsipinicon River in Independence in 1962.

"We got married and have been here ever since," O'Brien said.

So they're no strangers to the river's seasonal creep into their back yard. But even though they're used to, the prospect of packing up isn't too appealing.

"Everybody gets stressed," he said. "Nerve wracking, I guess you call it ... you think about how much stuff you'll have to move, which is terrible when you start loading everything up and find everyone to help you."

He said they've left for flooding twice, but now, he doesn't sweat these smaller swells.

And many of his neighbors think he can predict the rise better than anyone else.

"I know it!" he laughed. "Everybody always come to me and says, 'what's the river going to do?'"

Still, he's thankful the water won't reach his house this year.

"Good Lord was good to us," he said.
