Flooding continues in Vinton, but rivers have crested elsewhere

Posted: Updated:
VINTON (KWWL) -

While flooding continues in eastern Iowa, especially in areas like Vinton, the National Weather Service says the Cedar River will fall Monday night after reaching 17.6 feet, the eighth-highest crest in the city's history.

The Cedar River in Vinton has risen to moderate or major flood stage twice in six years.

Watching the river is getting to be common for people like Dora Vogt, who lives just a block away.

"If it had kept coming up, you're concerned," said Vogt.

With the river staying below 18 feet this time around, most aren't worried. Just a few streets are seeing flooding.

The city did have to close its compost site and multiple parks due to high water, but that's about it.

"If this is the crest time, we shouldn't have any flooding of any homes," said Rick Erickson, City of Vinton street superintendent.

That's because there are fewer houses close to the river these days.

"The majority of the homes that were substantially flooded were demolished at that time in 2008," said Chris Ward, Vinton City Administrator.

Homes were free from damage this time around, though people who live off the river always keep an eye on the forecast, just in case.

"Just watch it to make sure, and we can sandbag and do a few things to prevent it," said Vogt.

With the river at this height, the city didn't even make sandbags available, saying there wouldn't be a need for them.

The flood record here in Vinton was set in June 2008 when the river reached 24.7 feet, some seven feet higher than the river is right now.
