Wow factor: GOP State Convention breeds shocking results

URBANDALE (KWWL) -

Surprising is one word people are using to describe the outcome of Saturday's Republican State Convention.

David Young of Van Meter, and also former Chief of Staff to Sen. Chuck Grassley, received the Republican nomination for Iowa's third congressional district race. Nearly 500 delegates voted on Saturday, granting Young roughly 55 percent of the vote.

Young was not leading the pack heading into the convention; rather the exact opposite. After the June 3 primary, Young ranked fifth out of the Republican contenders. Bran Zaun left the primary with the majority of the vote.

The delegates' decision turned heads and threw in the shock value.

"There was a wow. A lot of wows. I'm an optimistic person. In the process you saw I got fifth place, but within that group, we were all single digits apart and anything can happen in a convention," Young said.

Brad Zaun got roughly 45 percent of the delegates' vote at the convention.

The last time a state convention was needed to decide a nomination, which happens when no candidate receives at least 35 percent of the vote in the primary, was in 2002; that's when Rep. Steve King received his nomination.

David Young will face Democratic challenger Staci Appel in November.
